Blunderbuss and Broadside – Transformers: Titans Return (Voyager Class)

Broadside is a little hard to wrap my head around. He is Voyager Class, so he is the medium scale figure. He transforms from a robot, into an aircraft carrier, and then a jet. There are figures that can be out of size, but this guy is crazy. Because of the way he works with Blunderbuss, it seems that he is a tiny aircraft carrier, rather than a giant jet. Anyway, let’s take a look at the figure.

Broadside

Alpha Trion

He is a severely retooled Alpha Trion. The only thing they seem to share is that Broadside becomes an aircraft carrier, while Alpha Trion becomes a space aircraft carrier. You can see some similarities around the feet, but that is about it.

Broadside has wings that from the front look like they belong to a jet, but from the back, they look like they are a part of the aircraft carrier. There is a big cockpit hanging off his back, so there is not a lot of greeble hanging around this guy.

He comes with Blunderbuss. A fitting name for this sea-faring Titan Master, as a Blunderbuss was a gun known to be carried by navy and privateers. Too bad Broadside didn’t come with a Blunderbuss to run around with. It seems like they could have, since they gave Sergeant Kup a musket at one point. Blunderbuss is based off of Sovereign who came with Alpha Trion. I would think they would try to mix these guys up a bit more, but oh well.

Transforming Broadside is pretty straight forward. He becomes an aircraft carrier. Nothing too exciting going on there. He comes with little jets that resemble the Aerialbots. It is supposed to help sell the illusion that this guy is actually really big… though he isn’t.

There are a few choices of places for Blunderbuss to sit. One is sitting in the gun mounted on the side of the aircraft carrier. I still think it is a terrible idea for someone to stick their Titan Master out in the elements of the fight. No head, means no robot. Not a good idea.

The second place, is in place of the flight tower. The antenna fold down, and the top flips in half to make a seat. Still not the safest, but better than hanging off the side.

Then there is the third mode. A… jet? This is what happens when you start with someone like Alpha Trion. You have a robot, a space aircraft carrier, and a lion. You go and make Broadside, with a robot, an aircraft carrier, and a jet? There are a lot of differences between a lion and a jet. So you give him a cockpit. Done. Add some wings. Done. And then squish everything in the back together and add some fins and stabilizers to help the illusion. It looks more like a block with a pointed nose than a jet.

I am thinking maybe it is kinda Macross style with giant jets hanging off the back. Maybe a little Jetfire like. Okay, I am back on board with the space jet idea. Too bad the aircraft carrier wasn’t kept as a space aircraft carrier too.

Overall I like him. He has a good robot mode. From there it is a fine aircraft carrier. Too small for any good, but still nice. And the jet is okay. You have to squint at it, but I have seen worse. I don’t think he is going to end up being anyone’s favorite figure of the Titan’s Return line, but he is a solid figure, and some much needed Voyager Class muscle for the Autobot side.

Galvatron and Nucleon – Titans Return – Transformers: Generations

Well, look at that. Its Galvatron in all of his Voyager Class Glory. He looks like Galvatron, and he looks good. He comes with his telltale super-cannon that makes Megatron jealous.

The overall body is fantastically designed. The overall look is great. He has strong legs to stand on. Wide shoulder with a sturdy torso. He can hold up his own gun.

There are a few places that are a bit lacking. The worse offender are the inside of the forearms. They are hollow to hold his hands, but they are hollow on the inside of the arms, so the holes are very easy to see. They didn’t even try to hide the holes in the back of the arms. There are a few other problems that we look at as we get to the pictures.

Problem #1. That head. What were they thinking??? Of course Galvatron needs the horned head with the crown going around. They couldn’t figure out how to do that with the Titan Master?

Instead we have a Titan Master with a spring-loaded face plate that comes up out of the chest. It is not terrible looking, just a little off putting. The head doesn’t fit tight to the mask.

The real problem is that is takes away from the articulation. Now Galvatron’s head doesn’t turn. That was one of the great things about the Titans Return line. We get these little Titan Masters and they have turning heads. But not for this guy. Ugh!

This is the other look at Megatron… I mean Galvatron.  Hey wait a minute.  Why does Galvatron look so much like Megatron?  Well, because he is Megatron reincarnated by the evil known as Unicron.  Or something like that.   They almost gave him enough crown around the edges to be enough.  If they had added purple paint we would have been close.

Wielding that gun.  It really is a lot of gun for one bot to carry.  But we have seen Galvatron do it forever.  From way back in 1986 we saw Galvatron march around with that clear/orange cannon.  Unlike Megatron, who had his cannon mounted on the side of his arm, Galvatron has his mounted to the top of his arm. And just like the G1 version, it is mounted way up on his bicep.  Even mounted up near his shoulder, it is still a huge weapon.

The cannon hinders the movement of the arm.  He cannot really bend his elbow much since there is nowhere for the arm to go.  If he gets the cannon blown off, he has a good arm to use.

There is a bit of extra backpack there in the back.  This is the cockpit for the new jet mode that Galvatron gets instead of the handgun mode from G1.   It is no the worse backpack we have ever had in a Transformer.

There is our little headmaster, I mean Titan Master.  This is Megatron… I mean Nucleon.  This is getting tough to keep track of here.  😉

Okay, transformation time. The first transformation is a giant cannon. Well, when you have a giant cannon for an arm, it is a pretty good chance you will turn into some sort of super weapon. Unlike Megatron that only became a handgun, Galvatron was given an extra mode to allow him to be used alone.

I am a little bummed that Hasbro did not design a place for l’il Megatron (Nucleon) to sit while the cannon was being used. If you want to leave Galvatron in this mode, you can stick Nucleon in his chest with his fold-up face before you complete this transformation…or put him in the cockpit. Either way, Nucleon will be hanging out upside down.

A few flips and changes and Galvatron does not become a handgun. We are pretty far past those days. In today’s world, Galvatron needs to be something that kids cannot be killed over, though NO ONE would have mistaken the G1 Galvatron for anything close to a real gun.

Arwing0

This time around, Galvatron gets to be Fox McCloud’s Arwing from Star Fox. You remember that video game, right? Am I really THAT old? Ah, the Super Nintendo. The graphics in the day were mind blowing. But I digress. Galvatron’s ship mode is so much like Fox’s ship that it is comical.

Anyway, this makes for a really nice ship. It is very functional for Nucleon to ride in the cockpit. There is the main cannon sitting up front. There are also smaller side cannons molded into the gunmetal grey parts along both sides of the cockpit.

“Decepticon, fast approaching. Take cover Wheelie!”

“You will let me into the prison to release my brothers!”

“Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?”

Is it a coincidence that Galvatron and Scourge both showed up early in this line? Both were created by Unicron, and Scourge was one of the main henchmen for Galvatron. Now all we need is for Cyclonus to show up, and we will have all three of Unicron’s crazy creations. We did just have Cyclonus in the Combiner Wars, and in the same Class, so that will probably be all we will see of him. That will be okay with me. He was a very good Transformer.

Overall, Galvatron is a really good figure. There are a few problems here and there. Most can be overlooked. The flip-up face plate is a glaring problem that takes his robot mode down for me a few points. The rest of his body is so well done though.

Infinitus and Sentinel Prime – Transfomers: Titans Return – Voyager Class Wave 1

Hey, isn’t Sentinel that jerk from the Animated series? Not riding round as a truck in this version.

As the first Voyager Class figure in the Titans Return line, he is a big boy, and we still have Leader Class figures to look forward to.

Sentinel is over the top bright, like an evening sunset. Orange, red, and yellow, he would really be bad to have on the battle field. It is probably his biggest weakness as a figure overall. The color really makes it hard to distinguish a lot of the really cool aspects of the figure.

He comes with Infinitus, the little Titan Master that becomes his head. It is a bit strange to see a big guy with the same size head as the Deluxe figures. This could start to be a problem when we get around to the Leader Class, if they are still running with the same head. They tried to improve the overall look by having parts that pop-up on either side of his head, to give some added bulk to the tiny head.

Sentinel’s first transformation is into a shuttle. It has some good firepower along the sides with two sets of cannons. There are ports for Sentinel’s guns to be mounted along the sides too. Too bad the two guns don’t match.

As with the rest of the line, the two guns can combine to create a ridable seat for Infinitus. It can be ported along the sides to give extra firepower when Infinitus doesn’t want to drive in the top cockpit.

Of course this line is in love with the idea of triple changers, and Sentinel is no different. I am told this secondary transformation is a tank. A really skinny tank. I am not sold on that. It looks like a powerful train to me. It is clear that this figure was totally meant to be Astrotrain, which we will get in Wave 2. Nobody is surprised about that one.

Based on his two vehicle modes, it seems that Sentinel should be gigantic. The shuttle, and tank/train seem to be out of scale and should be big enough for others to ride in. Of course he can’t be that big, so the Voyager Class will be it for him. He is usually pretty formidable, and large compared to other characters, and for now he is the big-boy on the block. I think he is going to feel a bit small here in the future when the Leader Class figures finally show up.

I am all out of Titans Return figures for a little while, but I have such a giant backlog of figures, we will not be slowing down any time soon.
