Spider-Armor Spider-Man and Superior Foe Beetle – Marvel MiniMates Toys R Us Wave 25 (Toys R Us Exclusive)

We are continuing our look at Toys R Us Wave 25 of Marvel Minimates. This time around, we get Spider-Armor Spider-Man alongside the Superior Foe Beetle. We are heavy on the Spider-Man figures this time around, with one variation of Spider-Man in each of the 2-packs.

Looking at the tray, this 2-pack isn’t quite as heavy on accessories as the Spider-Sense Peter Parker and Chameleon pack. It looks like we will get some good variations though.

First up, Spider-Armor Spider-Man. This is actually the Mark IV version of Spider-Armor. The first was in 1993, and only lasted one issue. Then we had MK II in 2011, MK III in 2012. This MK IV armor lasted two years from 2015-2017, before being utterly destroyed. Thankfully Peter was wearing his “underoos” under that costume. It has a bit of a different look, with stylized webs, and green around the chest logo and eyes. Not much of a difference from a standard figure, so easy to see why they decided to go with the version.

His accessory is Peter Parker’s head. This is more of a smiling version of Peter than the head that came with Spider-Sense Peter Parker, but they are interchangeable, so you can vary his look pretty easily.

Janice Lincoln, known as Beetle, is the daughter of Tombstone. Her outfit is a great iridescent green and purple. Hasbro did a great version of her in the Marvel Legends line, and she looks great again. She comes with a flight stand, though she is REALLY back heavy, so I had to put her on the stand backwards.

Her wings are fantastic. They are really large and are fully posable. The attachment points are on a backpack that fits over the waist post, and her neck. Those wings are safely in place.

Along with the wings and flight stand, Beetle also comes with hair and a cell phone. Her face and hair are pretty simple. I would not expect a lot more than that. Her cell phone fits nicely in her hand. She is probably taking a call from one of the other members of the Sinister-Six.

This is a fun wave for sure. Toys R Us got lucky to get their hands on this one. One more 2-pack to go. Stay tuned.

Spider-Sense Peter Parker and Chameleon – Marvel MiniMates Toys R Us Wave 25 (Toys R Us Exclusive)

Even though it appears Toys R Us is going down like a meteor, they are still getting some exclusives. This time around it the 25th wave and all are Toys R Us Exclusive.

First off the plastic insert. Ooh, there are a lot of extras in this set. Usually when we see exclusives, they are pretty sparse on extra parts. Not this time around. Bare arms and long hair for Chameleon. And on Peter’s side, there is hair, a full mask, a suit coat and arms to go with it. And… a third hand. Hmm, we will get to that in a bit. They both also have a clear stand, and there is a web line curled up behind Peter.

Standing side by side, this is an interesting pairing. Chameleon came about in the very first issue of The Amazing Spider-Man #1. But that is not what Spider-Man looked like back then. He didn’t have external web shooters that I know of. The closest I could find was the 1977 TV show that featured external web shooters and a belt. And then he has Spider-Boots on. This is a strange Spider-Man, but I like him. Let’s take a closer look at Spider-Man.

Spider-Man comes out of the box with half a mask on and his Spider-Sense going crazy. This is a great mask because you can have Peter dressed as Peter and still have his Spider-Sense tingling.

Thankfully we also get a full mask for Spider-Man. Nothing is worse than a single use MiniMate. One added accessory, and we are good to go for hours of play.

Now for the fun. Take off the arms, mask and Spider-Boots. Add a suit coat piece, new arms, black shoes, and his hair, and we get a super snazzy looking Peter Parker. He sure knew how to dress back in the day. The blue of his suit matches his other suit. *wink wink* Dress for the job you want. He certainly does dress nicer than a newspaper photographer.

And then there is that extra hand. Ah yes, on the top of the hand, there is a little spider painted on it. It is THE spider that gives Peter his powers. So no you can reenact Amazing Fantasy 15 when Peter first get bitten by the spider.

Chameleon looks great in his green bathrobe and purple ascot. This is a nice change from the recent Marvel Legends release that as a much newer update of the figure, wearing a dark suit. The head looks great in white with only the face painted on.

In the comics, the white face IS Chameleon’s face, and then he puts on someone else’s face over the top of his. That isn’t very logical for the purposes of MiniMates, so in this case you get to take off his face and there is a face underneath. Beautiful eyes, big lips, and dimples? Hmm, there is more to this figure than meets the eye.

Take off the arms, and bathrobe, and replace the arms with bare arms. Add some hair, and you have Peter Parker’s love interest, girl friend, wife, ex-wife, and anything in between, Mary Jane Watson. What a great surprise hiding under there.

Well, I love the Chameleon figure, and of course it is always fun to have a Mary Jane. Along with two great versions of Spider-Man/Peter Parker, so I grabbed a second 2-pack, so I can have all four figures. This is a very impressive start to this Toys R Us Exclusive set. I didn’t think there would be a lot of hope for the rest of the wave comparing to this one, but the other two sets came out really nice. Stay Tuned.

Marvel Minimates – Thor: Ragnarok – Walgreens and Toys R Us sets

With Thor: Ragnarok only a few weeks away, it is time to break into these MiniMates boxes and see what we have going on here.

Gladiator Thor and Hela:

Gladiator Thor and Hela are one of the two packs that are the same across the series. They come dressed for battle. Thor is wearing his gladiator outfit that we are very familiar with from the preview. The details in the outfit are fantastic. He comes with two blue/green swords that have replaced Mjölnir after it was destroyed by Hela.

Hela comes in her over-the-top headdress. It is so wide and fantastic looking. Hela also comes with a cape that is bit too long for her. It touches the ground before her feet, so she leans forward a bit. Good thing I was posing the figures in sand.

They both come with an additional accessory. Thor comes with his short hair, while Hela comes with an unmasked head and long hair.

Gladiator Hulk and Valkyrie:

Gladiator Hulk and Valkyrie are the other set that are the same amongst the retail sellers.

Hulk is nothing short of amazing in this small scale. He is HUGE! Well relatively huge anyway. He stands nearly a head taller than any of the other figures. He comes with lots of additional body parts to beef up his arms, legs and torso. There are great little additions here and there to make him larger overall using the same basic body as a standard Minimate and then going from there. He has his hammer and axe going into battle.  Valkyrie looks good. She comes with a sword that matches those of Thor in color. The design is unique. She also has a half cape similar to Thor, with a different color.

These two also have additional accessories. Hulk comes with hair, and Valkyrie comes with two small daggers. They are SO small. I am sure I am going to lose them soon.

It is not a surprise that these would be the four figures selected to be in all retail packs. You have to have the main two stars, Hulk and Thor, and you want a bad guy as well as someone else of interest. This is a good start.

Roadworn Hero Thor & Civilian Loki:

The Walgreens Exclusive side consists of 2 more 2-packs. The first is Roadworn Hero Thor and Civilian Loki. Thor looks to be in a toned down version of his Avengers outfit. We don’t know what he has been up to yet, but I am sure he is going home for a bit of a rest (you know because he is Roadworn Hero).

Loki is just a civilian at the moment. We know that won’t last long, but I like the all-black suit. It suits Loki very well. The only accessory in this set is Thor’s Mjölnir. We know what happens in the previews with the hammer…

Skurge & Grandmaster:

The other Walgreens Exclusive pair is Skurge and Grandmaster. We saw Grandmaster last at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2. Now he plays a major role in this movie as he is the leader of Skaar, and the reason we get to see a battle between Thor and Hulk.

Grandmaster is played by Jeff Goldblum, who I really like as an actor. Along with him in this set is Skurge who is played by Karl Urban, who I think is a totally under-utilized actor today. Skurge looks a little on the fat side as opposed to being in armor.  Neither figure comes with an accessory.

These are interesting secondary characters that make for a richer collection. It is nice to get some figures that are not all the same.

All 4 Walgreens packs have the same back pictures and info.

Sakaar Loki & Heimdall:

The final set is the Toys R Us Exclusive. TRU only got three 2-packs for this series, and the first two showed up at Walgreens as well.

A fitting 2-pack. Heimdall had been cast out of Asgard by Loki who was posing as Odin. Heimdall does not have his gold armor, but he does have his fantastic sword.

In the meantime, Loki is in his second box and is being called Sakaar Loki. Guess he ditches the black suit for some super colorful armor. I am bummed to see that there were not additional accessories beyond Heimdall’s sword. We saw Loki in the preview flipping a few daggers. That would have been an easy addition to the set, since we just saw two that came with Valkyrie.

All 3 2-packs come with the same backing for the TRU set.

I don’t know about the rest of the Marvel Universe, but I have been dying to see these two go at it since they began fighting amongst themselves in The Avengers. This should be a pretty epic battle.

Overall this is a great series of figures. Lots of fun, as I am sure the movie will be. Now I just have to wait for the movie in a few weeks.

Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson – 2-pack – Toys R Us Exclusive

This is the Toys R Us Exclusive 2-pack with Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson. It is labeled as “Spider-Man”, but this is really the All New All Different Spider-Man. You can tell by the green around the emblem on the chest, as well as the hint of green in the eyes of the mask. Basically in the comics, this is a new take on Peter Parker, where he is a Tony Stark level company owner, where his world has grown past New York, to encompass the world. Think about the trouble he has caused, or what has been caused to him on a New York scale, and blow it up to a world scale. That could be a lot of fun to read.

Anyway, we are looking at the figures today. This is one of the most known couples in all of comic history. Along with Lois Lane and Superman, and Cyclops and Phoenix, Peter and Mary Jane have gone through a lot together. Now we finally get our first Mary Jane Watson Marvel Legends figure, and she is AMAZING!!!

We do not get a lot of people in street clothes, since Hasbro doesn’t think they will sell. We have gotten a few suits, but that is about it. Now we get Mary Jane in a black tank top and blue jeans. The paint is fantastic. I do have to warn about looking at the black tank top when you are going to buy this set, if you can find multiple. The first set I found had some yuck on the shirt, and it really stands out against the black. When I went to another store and found more, there were three to choose from, and one of those also has stuff on the tank top. So, just be aware.

Close up on Mary Jane, she has an amazing head sculpt. The eyes are straight. The paint is applied so well. She has fantastic hair. Nothing wrong with this figure at all. She comes with one accessory, a bag that can be thrown over her shoulder. The strap is molded to go across her chest, so you are limited to it going one way only.

This is the first time in a very long time that we have had Peter with an unmasked adult head. We have gotten a teen version not too long ago. This head looks really good. One of the eyes is a bit off, but other than that, he looks good and handsome.

Spider-Man comes with 5 accessories. He comes with the masked head, equipped with the new green lenses. He also comes with an assortment of hands to allow 2 open hands, 2 fists, and 2 web-shooting hands.

I don’t know that this is my favorite Spider-Man outfit. I am not too keen on the green accents. A bit of a strange choice when the suit has always been black, red, and blue. I guess Marvel needs it to stand out when the chest is glowing in the comics. This is definitely the way 2-packs should be. Something new with a reprint figure, and an all-new figure that will blow us away. This is definitely a must-have for Spider-Fans. You cannot pass up Mary Jane Watson, and another Spider-Man to add to the Spider-Verse is okay too. We have been drowning in Spider-stuff this summer, since the movie came out, and Marvel Legends has done a great job with all of it.

I hate Toys R Us!!!

So I saw online this morning that Toys R Us is running a sale on the Mighty Morphin’ Legacy Falconzord.   $59.99 instead of the usual $79.99.   I went to the website, and there it was in all of it’s white and gold glory.

Screen Shot 2016-03-10 at 7.22.20 AM.png

I clicked on the “Add to Cart” button, and it gave me a popup for a Free Store Pickup Today.

Screen Shot 2016-03-10 at 7.19.16 AM.pngThe problem is that there is no store within 50 miles that carries the Falconzord.  So, I cannot order it online from the website because all of the stores in my area cannot figure out that they need to actually have a stock of a Toys R Us Exclusive toy?!?   Come on!   I have not even seen one of them in the store, and I have frequented many of these stores recently.
hironakamura-tru.jpg

I have been burned too many times when items are labeled with this sign.  When I see posts of upcoming toys and I hear they are Toys R Us exclusive I have to shout, “Fuuuuuuuuuuuuudge!”   But I did say ‘fudge’.  Anyone get my A Christmas Story reference?   If not shame on you and add that to your watch list for 9 months from now.

gty_toys_r_us_store_jc_141211_12x5_1600.jpg

I don’t get it.  I am a grown adult with money to spend on specific items.   Toys R Us has the market cornered on one of those items, Power Rangers, and they cannot seem to get it right.   It is too bad there isn’t a store out there that is dedicated to selling toys… oh wait, that is exactly what Toys R Us is supposed to be doing.    They are a toy store… I think.  It is is in their name.

Bandai is creating some of the best figures it ever has, and they are working with the devil.  Toys R Us seems to have such a hit and miss record for ordering.   In my area alone, I have 4 TRUs within what I would call ‘driving distance.’   There were 5, but they closed one down so they could sell the land to put up apartments.  We live in one of the most expensive housing areas in the country, and yet they cannot stock the items people really want.  Nor do they stock items that they have the cornered market for.  It says exclusive right on the box.   That means no one else can carry it.   People will HAVE to come to TRU to get it.   Maybe that just doesn’t make sense to them.

Now that the steam is really rolling out of my ears, I will end this rant.  On to better things as I figure out what I am going to do about getting my hands on this beautiful bird.    I did get the Legacy Megazord on Amazon for a great price, so I can start back filling some of the old Zords I do no have in my collection.

Clash of the Transformers – Legion Class – Toys R Us Exclusive

There are a few Transformers that are exclusive to Toys R Us in the Robots in Disguise line.   There are the two 2-packs here, as well as three Warrior Class figures, and some one-step and three-step figures.  As I shy away from any of the one-step figures, I will not be looking at them.   I will however be looking at the Legion Class figures today, and the Warrior Class figures coming up.

Clash of the Transformers - Logo

The TRU exclusive figures are listed under the Clash of the Transformers subline of the Robots in Disguise TV series line of action figures.  The figures are recolored versions for Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and Underbite. This is the first Megatronus figure we have seen in the RiD line.

I like the colors of Bee.  In vehicle mode we see mostly grey/blue, but get him in robot mode, and we get to see his signature yellow show.  As with most of the Legion Class figures, the articulation is pretty limited.  We get some shoulder movement, and leg/hip movement and that is about it.

This version of Optimus is pretty plain. He is basically white and dark grey with a few splashes of blue and red.  He doesn’t have much in terms of articulation either. Mostly some movement in the shoulders, and that is about it.

Underbite looks pretty close to his original Legion Class version, with a little bit of green added on. More really that much added, but it gives a bit more detail.

Megatronus is probably the best figure in this wave of 4. He has movement in his waist (due to transformation), and he is the only figure to come with a weapon. He does lack the articulation very much the same as Optimus. No knees or elbow joints. It really limits the play.

Underbite Vs Bumblebee

If Bumbleebee can hold off Underbite’s metal chomping jaws, he can win this Clash!

Bumblebee Wins!

Optimus vs Megatronus

Megatronus brought a gun AND a knife to this fight.  Optimus brought nothing!

Optimus Strike – “Side Kick!!!”

Megatronus falls!!!

Overall, these figures are just what you would expect from the smaller Legion Class figures.  They are rather simplistic and they don’t have the articulation of the larger scale figures.  What they do have is size and cost.  They are small enough for someone to carry in their pocket, or play a big scene with small figures.  They are also cost efficient.  They were $11.99 for the two-pack, at least where I live in California.  The single Legion figures are going for $7.99.  The single pack Legion figures are cheaper on Amazon, but the Exclusives are way more expensive.  It is still better to get them in store.

If you have the other figures in the line, these are nothing new… except for Megatronus. He is a good figure to pick-up for your Legion collection.  If he had come with the grey Bumblebee, I may not have even been interested in picking up both sets.  Underbite is really similar to the regular version, and a white Optimus really doesn’t do much for me, since they are repainting him to be Ultra Magnus, that should be out now, or very soon.  I wish Hasbro would stop sandwiching in an Ultra Magnus every time they make an Optimus.  They are really quite different, and should be treated separately, like they are doing in the Combiner Wars Line.

Bonus:

This is the first photo shoot, using my new background.  I am still working the kinks out of lighting, and I have some ways to go there.   This background is two sided.  This side was intended to be multi-scale.   I can use it with Legion Class, Deluxe Class, or Voyager Class figures.

It can also be used with other brands of toys too.  Marvel Legends, GI Joe, or really anything.  The back side was really the whole reason for making this background in the first place.  It is an alley scape really for Marvel Legends and that scale figures.  I have some prop pieces ready to go on it, and I have just found a few of the Rhino Series figures to get started on that photo shoot soon.

Coming up, I have a fun story to tell using Marvel Legends figures I carried in a backpack for over an hour through the rough forest, just looking for a place to shoot.   When I saw it, the whole store came around.   It should be fun.

Transformers: Prime – Bumblebee

And it begins anew…again.   Transformers: Prime has been out for a while.  I still hate you Hasbro for putting your show that I REALLY want to see on your dumb little channel that I cannot watch.  You are forcing me to watch them online.  And heaven forbid that they could put them on their site?  NO, they put little snipets of show that just get the juices flowing, but they are too short.

Anyway, rant over.  I am looking at the first figure to show-up at Toys R Us… at least the one figure that showed up at the one Toys R Us.  Bumblebee.  I know, I don’t need another Bumblebee, but I do want another Bumblebee.  I love him.  What can I say.  Even giving him another non-speaking role, I like him.

He comes with a stand.  It is just a folded piece of cardboard, but it is nice none-the-less.  And the best part is that I did not have to fold it.  If I was forced to fold it, it would have ended up in the recycle bin along with all of that cardboard background junk from the Star Wars figures.

Bumblebee is very much himself in this incarnation.   Taking similarities from the recent movies, he is a nice sturdy figure.   He has his telltale doors flipped out and a nice combo of yellow and black.  The addition of an arm-mounted gun to give this little bee a bit of a sting.

His head design is nice, once again taking cues from the movie Bee.  I would liked to have seen the return of the G1 horns that he sported so well.  Maybe if we get a Cliffjumper figure, we will see the horns.  He did have them in the first episode of the show.

In either a “come and get me”, or “I surrender” stance.  More to the point that he can actually raise his hands. Amazing for a Transformer.  Generally they are very limited in that upwards movement, but Bee is so well designed, and he can really articulate.

In vehicle mode, his is sort of an updated, futuristic version of his movie self.  Black lines run all over him, and his hood has the engine sticking out.   Stocky and tough looking, just the way we like him.   The gun is supposed to mount under the back end of the car, kind of sticking to his feet, but mine does not stay well and ends up flicking off.

A little glance at a tiny portion of my Bumbebee figures.   Just a look at the evolution of Bumblebee in the past few years.  With Prime Bee is Reveal the Shield, Generations (War for Cybertron), Movie, and Animated.   It is really neat to see how there can be a lot of different figures of the same character, but still hold some of the most important aspects that make him who he is.
