Supergirl and Flash Crossover (CBS)

flashsupergirlI have to assume this took some doing to get a character from CW onto a CBS show, but boy did they do it well.  When this episode began, Barry Allen showed up with a device on his chest and a quick answer to the problem that these two superheroes have never heard of one another.  Of course Barry is from a different Earth.

This was all of the back story we needed.   Now for the current story in Supergirl, we have been following the decline of Siobhan Smythe into Silver Banshee.  This episode was seamless into that storyline, not only carrying on the main story but making it a natural fit for The Flash to need to assist in the capture of Silber Banshee and Live Wire.   Barry brought in his knowhow, and was able to assist in a very big way, with both creating ear plugs that will stop Banshee’s scream, and also the mention that Barry gave the police department the ability to hold meta-humans.  This was a point of contention between Kara and James as he didn’t like the DOD holding people without trial, even if they are super bad.

In terms of writing, I think this is one of the best Supergirl episodes to date.  The dialog was great, including some fantastic one-liners by Cat Grant, where she comments that the team standing around her office looked like a pretty racially diverse show on the CW.  Of course, having the quick wit of Grant Gustin worked so well as Barry and Winn had a great time playing off one another with their nerd talk.  There were such cute moments as well, such as when Barry began to explain the multiverse, and Winn and Kara looked as giddy as school girls to hear him explain it. They showed almost all of the main characters in this episode with the exception of Kara’s sister Alex, who is missing for some unknown reason.   Overall this episode was so well done, that is blends well into the existing story line.  Will Barry ever mention the outing to this alternate Earth at some point on the CW?

I am really hoping that this really is the beginning of DC tying their universes together.   Marvel has done such an amazing job of bringing their movies and TV together, with mentions going both ways.   DC has seemed fractured over the years with no cohesion.  The Flash and Arrow has done a great job of bringing their two shows together with yearly crossovers and guest spots, and now they have brought Supergirl into the fold, if ever so slightly.  As Marvel continues to dominate the theaters and TV with the weight of Disney thrown behind it, DC started on the back foot, especially with a bit of recent casting kerfuffle when they showed a different Flash for the movie universe.  I get that DC is known for having a multiverse, but they have to be careful not to keep it too fractured.

This crossover is hopefully a sign of the times for DC in the future.

Poison Ivy and Supergirl – DC Super Hero Girls

I know, I know, it should be Ivy and Harley, but I really felt these two would work better together.  I really liked the first two DC Super Hero Girls I reviewed, Batgirl, and Wonder Woman.  These two are not my favorite.  Of course when you show up to the party with 6 new girls, all of them are not going to be everyone’s cup of tea.  Now that is not to say I don’t like them.  They are both very nice figures, and overall they do a good job representing the character.  Who knows?  If I had opened these girls first, I may have liked them a lot more, but they were up against some tough competition.

Poison Ivy:

I love Poison Ivy’s hair. It is a beautiful blend of reds and oranges. Mattel went to a lot of trouble to get a really nice blend of colors.

I get a strong Barbie vibe from her that I didn’t get from either Batgirl or Wonder Woman. I think it may be a bit of the painted on face, and a lot to do with the outfit. I think it is less glamorous than her outfit in the show. This outfit is very similar, but there is a lack of flow and dress quality that she has in the show. The shoes had a lot of potential, but other than the vines that wrap around her legs, the shoes are really boring. I would really liked to have seen some amount of detail in the shoes, but they are lacking any, and one of mine was even miscast, and it had a bubble in it, which now left a hole. Ugh!

Once again the articulation works really well. Lots of good movement all over, including great articulation in the rib cage area that really helps to make the figures more dynamic.

Supergirl:

It is kind of expected that Supergirl would definitely end up with a Barbie vibe. A painted face with blond hair.

What she does have going for her is the great athletic build that all of the DC Super Hero Girls have. She is the first in the line with a skirt on, and she looks great wearing it. She also wears a pair of hightop sneakers with socks, and they are really cute with her overall outfit.

The only real letdown with the outfit is the cape. It attaches to two pegs in the back of her necklace. I can’t imagine why they would make a rubber/plastic cape when the rest of her outfit is such great fabric material. It would have been so easy to make a fabric cape. Instead she is back-heavy with the plastic cape.  The rest of the outfit, top/skirt combo look great, and have a real nice textural difference to make the outfit really stand out.

I had some trouble with her hair. Unlike the rest, Supergirl’s hair feels like a different material. It is very silky, and though it feels nice, it is a bit unruly, and hard to control. I may have to end up washing it to get it to lay right.

DC Bishoujo Statues

I caught a glimpse of some of the new DC Bishoujo statues coming out in the VERY near future.  In order of appearance:

Wonder Woman Bishoujo

Supergirl Bishoujo

Ghostbusters Lucy Bishoujo

The DC designs have been high on my list from Batgirl to Catwoman.  I don’t expect anything less with Wonder Woman, being that she is also designed by Shunya Yamashita.

Supergirl is a bit different, so I will have to reserve judgement until I see her.   And of course anyone who has been to a Con in recent years, has more than likely seen the “Sexy Ghostbusters” walking around.  Kotobukiya has taken the idea to an Anime level.   Sure to be a favorite of Anime and Ghostbusters fans.  Sounds like me.  😉

There are also more of the Marvel figures coming out, Ms. Marvel, Jean Grey, and Black Cat.  We will see.
