Slog – Transformers: Age of Extinction

Well, we continue to get some new Dinobots that never made it into the movie.  This time around we get Slog, a larger Voyager Class figure.  He is very large and in charge.  Strong and bulky with a lot of the medieval armor look that we have seen with the other Dinobots.

Take this knights of ole’.  Slog comes with two lances, and he doesn’t even have a horse to ride.  I like how strong he looks.  Big thick legs, and great armor layered all over.  His face/helmet is really cool with lots of details.  There are a lot of rubber parts on him that could pose problems in the future if they are not taken care of properly.  He is the color I think they should all be.  Some of the other Dinobots are outrageously bright. This grey/black combo with touches of red are really well executed.

I found his transformation to be very difficult, and his chest area when turned into the Apatosaurus would not stay in place.   The directions were to change Slog from the dino into a robot.  So, for the initial transformation, you had to reverse the directions, which is a terrible way to present this anyway.  It will be near impossible for kids to make this transformation on their own.   I also don’t like the giant balls that hang out on the sides of the neck where the lances can be attached.  There is a lot for me not to like in this mode.  I am going to keep him in robot mode from now on.

We might as well take a look at him with his lances and side “guns” attached.   One of the guns on mine is loose, so it will not stay up very well.   The lances coming out at head height is a bit weird visually.

I think he is a good fit with the other T4 Dinobots.  It is funny because his coloring is how I think all of the Dinobots should look, but with him in the grey color, he gets lost in the Skittles of Dinbots.  They should have made him yellow, and then we would have had a complete rainbow of Dinobots.

Transformers: Age of Extinction – Dinobots (Strafe, Scorn, Slug)

Today we are going to look at three of the new Deluxe Class Dinobots.

Strafe –

Strafe is a flyer in his dino-mode.  In robot mode, he continues with the medieval armor appearance.  The two beast heads work in the front to create strong shoulders and a pretty good look.

This Strafe is from the Toys R Us Exclusive that comes with a Mini-Con of the same figure (a redeco of Swoop).  It is the same Strafe figure, but just with a little extra.   There is one other out there as well, I think it might be Slug.

Talk about your epic pose.  I sure hope we get to see Strafe do this in the movie.  How bad-ass does he look with his wings out?  Pretty sweet.  You can really get a sense of the great armor he has.  The gauntlets on his forearms are awesome, as are the very strong looking legs.

And then we get to his dino-mode.  A two-headed pterodactyl.   This once again makes me question the reason to deviate so much from a standard dinosaur.  Ah well.

There is a lot of articulation in the wings that allow for some pretty good poses, instead of having to stick to the strait wings we get a lot of times.

Scorn –

I really like the overall design of Scorn.  His beast mode is pretty fantastic.  From the tall sail, to the long tail, to the head that moves back and forth.

I don’t love it when Transformers only have one usable hand.  I would rather like to see a second hand rather than a tail for a hand, but if you are going to be one hand short, at least his tail is huge and makes for a great weapon.  And what is better than one weapon?  Two weapons.  His tail hides his sword that he can use to make a little extra trouble.

Dinobot Slug –

Who ends up with a name like Slug?  I expect to see this guy sleeping through the whole movie.   He is a pretty good interpretation of a triceratops.  Only a few added parts to give him a little AoE extra.

I think Slug really shines in robot mode.  Strong and powerful is the name of the game.  Two swords wielded in very strong hands.  He looks to be quite a force.

There you have them, the first three Dinobots.  I still haven’t seen any Decepticons.  They have all be Autobot from the get go.  Of course we don’t really know much about the enemy from the trailer.  We know they are coming to eradicate the human race, but who are they?  Guess we will just have to wait and find out.

Transformers: Age of Extinction – Grimlock

The Big Boy!  Grimlock, finally making a showing in the new Transformers film.  I have been waiting through three movies for this one.  They are looking to be big in the film, so the best guy to start with is the Leader Class Grimlock.  He is big, and he is chromed all over.  A little homage to the G1 Grimlock.

He has quite a few colors across his body.  Chrome, black, grey, and fades of metallic orange.  From the first look, he doesn’t look a lot like the G1 Grimlock.  The colors are different, there are no tell-tale designs that speak to the G1 Grimlock.  His head is quite different, and he doesn’t have his sword.

There is a trend you are going to see in the Dinobots.  In robot mode, they have a medieval appearance, which looks like they are wearing knight’s armor, especially in the head designs.  Some are even more blatant about it than Grimlock’s head.

Hmmmm, pointy shoes.  I don’t know about this design feature.   It is a bit strange to see an elf shoe on a big fighting robot.  This trend follows all of the dinobots.  They all have the pointy little shoes.

It was not on the directions, so I don’t know if it is an actual design feature, or a happy accident, but the mace can be folded up, combined with the shield, and stored on Grimlock’s back.  It is out of the way when you don’t want him holding all of his weapons.

Now we get to his beast mode.   Are we back to Beast Hunters?  Nope, on to Transformers 4.   This is not a very accurate T-Rex.  It sure would have been nice to have seen him look a lot more like a T-Rex rather than the more stylized designs we saw during the Beast Hunters run of Prime.  It looks like, from the movie trailers, he will not really ever look like a T-Rex.  Dragon yes.    His body is very wide.   The ribcage is about half again as wide as what looks to be proper proportions.   This leaves him looking a little flat across the torso.

The face is great.  He has a moving jaw which makes for lots of good playability.   He can move his tiny little T-Rex arms.  Two points of articulation there.  Pretty nice.

Overall, I am happy with Grimlock.  There are some things I would like to have seen be a little better.  A sword, a robot head that looked a bit more like the classic Grimlock, and a little more T-Rex looking dino design.  His transformation is pretty good.  One problem there is the direction say, “Reverse order to change to dino mode.”   This would be nearly impossible for a kid to do.  The directions to go in reverse order are quite tricky.   Good luck parents.

Coming up next.  We have a trio of dinobots as well as a trio of Autobots.  One of them breaks on me, with no pressure at all.  Find out which one you will need to be careful with…

Ah, finally some Power Core Combiner Transformers for the Masses

There have been a bunch of no-name Transformers out there so far in the Power Core Combiner line.  But no more.   Here we have two of the most known teams in Transformers history, and they have a bit of history themselves.   The Dionbots and Constructions.

The Dinotbots and Constructicons have a history of battling during the G1 television show.  This time though the Constructions do not have the advantage of combining since the Dinobots will be able to do it as well.

I am surprised to see the Dinobots being made since they will not be able to be used in another PCC set very easily.   Like the Constructicons, it is probably for the fans.  The pictures are on the small side, but both sets are lookin good so far. It is a bummer that they made the PCC sets with only one true Transformer.  It would have been quite something to have a full set of transforming Dinobots.  It would have been like Power Rangers on crack.   Fun to the max.  But this will work too.  Definitely something a bit different from the previous sets.  And who knows, using other Commanders, they could make some pretty awesome combined robots.

Looks to be about December for the release.
