Star Wars Scoundrels – Book Review

Scoundrels

Timothy Zhan pulls out another fun book.  Best known for the Thrawn Trilogy, he returns in this one-shot story to continue filling in the time gaps in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Star Wars meets Ocean’s 11. Han Solo and Chewbacca plan a heist to recover credits from some bad people for a guy they don’t really know. Turns out they are in over their head as they discover the people they are up against are none other than Black Sun.
Taking place after the events of A New Hope, Han and Chewie are on their own since there is no real Jedi presence to get them out of the trouble they are inevitably going to end up in.
Less of a science fiction story, and more of a crime story, that follows the hand-picked team as they have to infiltrate an impenetrable building, to get past innumerable guards, to finally face an indestructible safe. Definitely a challenge for someone who is a smuggler, not a thief. Add in the fact that an old “friend,” Lando Calrissian, makes an unexpected appearance. Leading to the future confrontation on Cloud City? You bet!
A fun read that will keep you guessing, and explain some of the excitement between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes back.

Book Review: Warm Bodies

Are you into Zombies?  If yes, then you need to read this book.  If no, then you need to read this book.   Haha!  I know, a book that works for both sides of the zombie coin.  Love it or hate it, zombies are the new vampires.  And better yet, they don’t shimmer in the sun.

Now this is a love story, and if you don’t like love stories, this might not be for you.  BUT, if you think the idea of a zombie falling in love is an interesting concept, you might want to give it a read.

Isaac Marion created a great debut novel, where we follow a zombie named ‘R’ around a world that has long since been decimated by the ravages of the zombie apocalypse.  He does not go into why the zombies arrived, but focuses more on the future.

Our zombie ‘R’ eats the brain of a girl’s boyfriend, and then falls in love with the girl.   Seems rather Shakespeare huh?  We don’t even have to deal with that awkward moment of the girl being mad at him when he tells her the truth about eating her boyfriend.  She seems rather okay with the situation when it comes time, and you know going into this thing that this situation would come sooner or later.

Hearing ‘R’s thoughts along the way, as the world is revealed to him with ever increasing cognition of what is around him really makes for an interesting way to elaborate on the world.

This story is definitely out of the ordinary for the standard zombie book, but it was an interesting read.  At 240 pages, it is a quick read.   It will not disappoint.

And get ready, the movie comes out in February (2013), and since it is from Summit Entertainment (you know, the Twilight studio), they know a thing or two about fantastical battles. In addition there is a sequel book slated for some time in the future.

Hunger Games Event – After Show

The Hunger Games party was a lot of fun.  Lots of activities for people to play.  They had Capitol make-up studios, knot tying, shooting (with a wii), an obstacle course, and lots of other activities.   They also had two reaping ceremonies where the kids and adults faced off in events, with the winners of each game facing off in a trivia battle for the ultimate winner.  They had some food as well.  I am sure it would not surprise you HG fans to know it was mostly bread and cheese… a main staple of District 12 folks.

My costume went over well.  I had a few people tell me that I looked like I belonged at Disneyland.  My wife, who dressed up as Katniss, told me that she dressed up like Katniss, while I was actually a coal miner.   That felt good to know my hard work was appreciated.  And now for the pictures.

I added the stripe and #12 to the jumpsuit to try and sell the idea that I came from District 12, though I did not need to sell the idea that much. People really appreciated the work on the suit. The black on my face is actually charcoal, the same as I used on my helmet. It was quite hard to get off after the party.

The back of the jumpsuit. Masking off the 12 for the back was a little tricky, but it was SO worth the time and effort.

Hat to toes. We were watching a lady show us how to make a braided cord bracelet to use as survival gear.

What a fun event.   Now I am looking for my next event to make a costume to.  Halloween is too far away.

Currently Reading: Ready Player One

Okay all you 80s nerds, this is the book for you.   I got this book as a sort of in between while I was waiting for another book.  It sounded kinda fun so I thought I would give it a try.  I CANNOT PUT IT DOWN!!!

It is a post-apocalyptic sort of world in 2024 where the world has begun to run out of natural resources.  Think about what it would be like if we did not recover from our current recession.   Mobile home parks where houses are stacked 15 high is the new norm.  People are barely working, if at all, the school system is shot, and people don’t have a hope.

Well, they do have one escape, the OASIS.   An interactive online world developed by one of the greatest video game designers the world has ever seen.  Think along the lines of someone like Steve Jobs.   He creates a world in cyberspace for people to live out their lives, playing and working.  People in OASIS have jobs, kids go to school, and it is all free.

When the designer dies, he leave behind a game.  A game where the winner is given all of his fortune… a few billion dollars and the most lucrative business ever.

The adventure follows one teen, Wade, also known as Perzival.  He uses all of his vast knowledge of all things 80s to try and solve the puzzles to win the game.  Upon solving the first puzzle, his world comes crashing down around him as we find out the the evil company who is also trying to win is willing to kill for it.

This is one exciting book.  I am sure anyone who likes video games and movies would like this book.  If you grew up in the 80s or at least like the 80s, you are going to love this book.  There are so many great references to games, movies, and TV shows.

Give it a whirl.  I bet you will like it.
