Paralon and Scorponok – Transformers: Robots in Disguise

Two peas in a pod. Or two scorpions in a cyclone. Does two make a cyclone?

The new Robots in Disguise figures started to hit the shelves, and the first thing I noticed were the overlapping figures from the standard Warriors line, and the Warriors from the Clash of the Transformers line.

First off we have Paralon and Scorponok. Scorponok is the standard figure, while Paralon is the Toys R Us Exclusive figure in the Clash of the Transformers line.

They come out of the box in robot mode, as most all Transformers do. Since they are exactly the same, with the exception of color and head sculpt, it would be good to look at the two together.  The details on the two are really well done. They have a lot of articulation, with some special insect like legs that have two knees to give that backwards leg bend. As with nearly all Robots in Disguise figures, it would have been really nice to have wrist twist, but that does not seem like it is going to happen.  These two have a really cool tail with lots of articulation just in the tail. There is a port that allows the sword to be wielded back there too.

When we transform them into scorpion mode, we hit a bit of a snag. The pinchers really fall short, and that is a big part of what makes these guys who they are. Their giant shoulders come loose and move down over their “hands.” The claws are supposed to close to make pods. The mechanism that is supposed to hold the pods closed does not hold tight, and the whole claw falls open. I noticed it was worse on Paralon.

Other than the big problem with the claws, the rest of the figure is great.

The transformation is a lot of fun, with the legs folding up under the body, the head being hidden inside the torso with a scorpion head coming out with moving jaw. The tail goes up in the back and has a lot of movement. You can attach the sword, or not. There is a fully detailed stinger on the tip of the tail to go for a more show accurate look.

I was really excited to get Scorponok, as I have been a fan since way back in Beast Wars. I have a bit of a problem telling the two apart since I remember Scorponok being purple with the red visor.  In the Robots in Disguise show, they went with the yellow/orange color.  I think they already had a few purple guys, so they needed to mix it up a little.  I can see that.  I am pretty sure I will keep referring to Paralon as Scorponok for a long time to come. They are really great in robot mode. They would be great in beast mode, if they didn’t have that problem with the claws. So close.  I will probably always have them in robot mode, so it is not all that bad, but if they are going to come up with a new gimmick for transformation, it would be good to make sure it works.
