The Marvelous Land of Oz

Well, I finished the book in about two days.  The pictures are so captivating, that I did not want to rush through the book.  Skottie Young does such an amazing job with the artwork.  It shows that he put so much thought into the characters and settings.

Equally impressive is the writing by Eric Shanower.  I am sure it is not the easiest to follow L. Frank Baum’s writing and turn it into a comic series.  At times the original book seems like it is just running on an on, but Shanower really seems to break the story down to the important parts, and leave the rest to the artist to interpret.

This book is a whole lot of fun.  We get to see our friends the Scarecrow, and Tin-Woodsman.  The Scarecrow takes a back seat in my opinion to the newest of the characters, Jack Pumpkinhead.   It is really fun to see how he came to be.   A funny prank by our new human character, Tip.

And then there is what Eric Shanover is calling the best kept secret in all of literature.  I have to say I was surprised myself.   The Wizard of Oz is a part of pop culture in the United States, and has been for many, many years.   As for what that secret is?   You will have to read the book to find out.

If you do, or if you already have read the book, let me know what you think or thought of H.M. Woggle-Bug T.E.  That guy bothers me.
